CitationDistinguished for scientific analyses of growth phenomena of plants and for application of biological and mechanical science to the cotton industry. Author of fifty publications on cotton. Botanist in Egypt 1904-1914; cleared up the relation of cotton growing to irrigation and introduced new plant-physiological methods for the 'Quantitative Analysis of Agricultural Yield' (Phil Trans, 1915-1917); subsequently, as Head of an Industrial Experimental Department in Manchester, researched on the structure and related physical properties of the single cotton hair.
