CitationBorn in 1845, Col Crompton (after winning a medal and clasp as a Naval Cadet in the Crimean War) was engaged in military service in India for 12 years where he did much to develop mechanical traction. He was a prominent pioneer in electrical engineering, designer and builder of early dynamos, fertile of new ideas and bold in carrying them out. In later professional life he has given much attention to questions of standardisation and the establishment of international units. Author of many papers on engineering science. Has twice been President of the Institute of Electrical Engineers, and was active in forming their Corps, which he commanded in the South Africian War. Faraday Medallist, etc, etc.
