Citation | Has made fundamental contributions to the understanding of plastic deformation, especially that of metals, by his theoretical and experimental work on single crystals. Has also carried out investigations of immediate practical importance, such as his work on fracture, strength of soldered joints and fatigue. His paper on theory of rolling was awarded the Thomas Hawkesley Gold Medal by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers in 1944. His work is characterised by originality and elegance of treatment, particularly evidenced in the design of his apparatus. He has founded one of the leading research schools of metal physics in this country. |
