Title | Hill, Maurice Neville: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Certificate of Election |
Citation | Distinguished for his contributions to the study of the floor of the ocean. Some years ago he was the first to obtain satisfactory seismic records in deep water; this technique has proved of great importance. He has also developed a sea-going proton magnetometer and other instruments. He has led numerous expeditions in Discovery II (underlined) and other ships which have made a major contribution to our rapidly growing knowledge of the ocean floor. He is the leading man in this field in this country and has played a large part in the growth of the subject from a neglected corner of oceanography to one of the major fields of scientific work. |
