Title | Smith, Robert Allan: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Certificate of Election |
Citation | Distinguished as the leader of one of the best groups in this country working on semi-conductors and microwaves. The work on semi-conductors has greatly extended the range of wave-length over which photoconducting cells can be used and is of great importance for infra-red spectroscopy. This practical success is one of the fruits of a broad investigation on the properties of the sulphides, selenides, tellurides and antimonides which has also given important results of a more fundamental kind. The work on microwaves has led to practical methods of producing and using millimetre waves and has made possible accurate and detailed work in a region of the spectrum that was hitherto almost unknown. At an earlier stage in his career Dr. Smith worked on the passage of electrons through gases and is the author of seven experimental and theoretical papers on this subject. During the war he did valuable work on radio navigation and on aerials; he is the author of two books on these subjects, a book on thermodynamics, and principal author of the best book on the detection and measurement of infra-red radiation. |
