Title | Welsh, Harry Lambert: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Certificate of Election |
Citation | Distinguished for his work in spectroscopy as applied to the study of molecular structure and intermolecular forces. He was the first to develop methods for high resolution Raman spectroscopy which permit the Raman effect to be used in the accurate determination of molecular constants. He has discovered with M.F. Crawford and J.L Locke the phenomenon of pressure-induced infrared absorption, and has carried out various spectroscopic investigations with high pressure gases which have contributed greatly to our knowledge of intermolecular forces. His studies of infrared and Raman spectra of liquefied and solidified gases, especially of hydrogen and its isotopes, have also shown new important aspects of molecular interactions. |
