TitleGowans, James Learmonth: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCertificate of Election
CitationHis claim to election mainly rests on his clear demonstration that very large numbers of lymphocytes leave the blood, pass into the lymph and reappear in the blood. This demonstration of lymphocyte circulation completely upsets previous views about these cells. Autoradiographic studies have shown that a major route of this recirculation of lymphocytes from blood to lymph is via the lymph nodes and that the majority of lymphocytes have a long life-span. Work is proceeding with the elegant technique worked out for the study of lymphocytes.
