Citation | Finniston has made many important contributions as a metallurgist particularly in the field of special nuclear materials. For example, his work in metal extraction processes and in the development of new alloys of metals and ceramics has helped in the solution of many problems in the development of reactors and he has also played a leading part in the study of liquid metal fuels and the investigation of the effects of neutron irradiation on fissile and non-fissile materials. After leaving his post as Chief Metallurgist, A.E.R.E. Harwell, in 1959, he continued original investigations on nuclear fuels and materials at C.A. Parson. At the present time he is Managing Director if the International Research & Development Co. Ltd., the largest sponsored research organisation in this country. In this capacity he has gathered together an active team of investigators into scientific and technological problems and by his first-class scientific leadership is stimulating important applied research over a wide range of subjects. |
