Title | Mandelstam, Joel: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Citation typed |
Citation | Distinguished for his contributions to the analysis of regulatory mechanisms in bacterial metabolism. Discovered that in resting (N-starved) bacteria adaptation involves a breakdown of endogenous proteins to amino acids and resynthesis of enzymes suited to the new environment. Contributed vitally to showing that specific 'end-product repression' of enzyme biosynthesis operates not only in biosynthetic pathways but also in catabolic processes and is the mechanism by which glucose and other carbohydrates may inhibit the formation of many enzymes involved in energy supply. His work, which is characterized by clarity of design and experimental resourcefulness, has greatly advanced the understanding of enzyme adaptation in micro-organisms. |
