TitleGuttmann, Sir Ludwig: certificate of election to the Royal Society
DescriptionCitation typed
CitationDistinguished for his work on the physiological and pathological mechanisms in paraplegia. With collaborators he has shown that a group of phenomena in paraplegia are due to interference with regulatory mechanisms, the severity of which varies with the level of the lesion. He has based his internationally known work for paraplegics and the disabled on these pathophysiological principles. He has organised and directed the Spinal Centre at Stoke Mandeville, Aylesbury, and the International Paraplegic Games.
