CitationMr Emanuel Mendes da Costa of London, greatly desiring the honour of becoming a member of this Royal Society; We do hereby propose him for a Candidate, and on our own personal acquaintance recommend him, as a Gentn well Skilled in Philosophical Learning and Natural knowledge, particularly in what relates to the Mineral and Fossil parts of the Creation: as one exceedingly diligent in his enquiries, and who applying himself with great assiduity to the Study of Natural history, is likely to be a usefull member of our Society, and a zealous promoter of that knowledge, for the improvement of which the Same was founded
