The Author of A Paper on the Reduction & Discussion of the Deviations of the Compass observed on board of all the Iron built Ships and a selection of the Wood built Steam Ships in HM Navy and the Iron built Steam Ship Great Eastern. Published in the Phil Tr 1860, p 337, and, one of the Joint Authors of a Paper on the effect produced on the Deviation of the Compass by the length and arrangement of the Compass Needles and on a new mode of correcting the Quadrantal Deviation. Published in the Phil Tr 1861, p 161 and author of various other Papers on the Magnetism of Ships and of a Variation Chart published by the Admiralty. Distinguished for his acquaintance with the science of Magnetism particularly with reference to the Deviation of the Compass; and Hydrography on account of which he was specially attached to the Baltic Fleet of 1854. Eminent as a Nautical Surveyor having surveyed a great part of the Coasts of New Zealand & Australia including Torres Straits & other parts of the World.
