CitationIn 1849 Commanded a Squadron consisting of HMS Columbine Fury and Phlegethon employed on SW Coast of China - Proceeded with it through the Channel between Lieuchew and Nowchow deemed not navigable until then - Explored the North end of Hainan, the Gulf of Tonquin and the Tonquin River. Report in Hydrographical Office and partially published by it in the Nautical Magazine Numbers of February and March 1852 - See also Article by M Jurien de la Graviere in Revue des Deux Mondes 1851 Art Amaral et les Pirates Chinois Page 529 - Author of Meteorological Observations 1846 to 1850 on the Cyclone theory and remarks on three Typhoons in the China Sea and two hurricanes off the Mauritius - communicated to Indian Government and similar observations in Atlantic at Bermuda and Western Islands.
Two pamphlets 1853 and 1858 on statistical subjects connected with the Royal Navy. Has devoted considerable attention for some years to questions connected with the use of iron for defence. Chairman of Iron Plate Committee Since January 1861.
