CitationGeorge Henry Richards. Distinguished for his knowledge of Hyrography, Nautical Astronomy, Magnetism & allied Sciences. Eminent as a Nautical Surveyor and Navigator, having been engaged as Surveying Officer on the coasts of Western America, Polynesia, and China (7 years). As Lieutenant in the survey of the Falkland Islands, Rio de la Plata, the Parana and the Uruguay (4 years); as Commander in the survey of the coasts of New Zealand (4 years). Served as Commander of HMS Assistance in the Arctic Expedition of 1852-4, in search of Sir John Franklin (2 1/2 years) during which he commanded several Extended travelling Expeditions, and discovered and mapped several hundred miles of new country. Having been engaged in command of the surveys of the coasts of Vancouver Id & British Columbia (in the course of which he made valuable observations, the earliest in absolute time, and careful drawings of the Great Eclipse of 1860) (7 years), ending in a voyage round the world with a view to a series of Magnetic observations, & the measurement of Chronometrical distances; in the course of which voyage he was appointed Hydrographer of the Admiralty by virtue of which office he is charged with the control and direction of the scientific department of the Navy afloat.
