CitationDistinguished by his Naval Services in all quarters of the Globe, particularly in the Arctic regions and the Search after Franklin during the years 1850, 1851, 1852, 1853 & 1854; by his successful operations in the Sea of Azoff when in command of an advanced Squadron; by his conduct in China & Japan, when in conveying the British Ambassador (Earl of Elgin) he placed the Capital of Japan under the guns of a ship of war; by his ascent of the great river Yang-tse-Kiang for 350 miles and during a civil war (a feat never before accomplished by Europeans; and lastly by his services in the North Atlantic, Mexico, &c. Author of "Stray Leaves from an Arctic Journal", "Quedah, or Journal in Malayia", "The Discovery of the North West Passage", "Japanese Fragments", "The Light on the Peiko"; & several Articles on Naval Science, such as "Our Iron Clad Navy", "Turret Ships" &c &c.
