TitleMontgomerie, Thomas George: certificate of election to the Royal Society
CitationDepy Superintendent Great Trigonometrical Survey of India has been employed on the geodetical operations of that Survey since 1852, appointed Astronomical Assistant in 1862, assisted in the measurement of two Base Lines, and has extended the triangulation from N Latde 32 degrees to N Latde 36 degrees 3/4, carrying it over the great Himalayan Range by stations on its loftiest peaks. Has, by explorations organized by him, in extension of the above, for the first time determined the breadth of the Himalayan System to be 400 miles from the Punjab to near Yarkund.
Has added greatly to our knowledge of the physical geography of Asia by his maps and by determining the heights of the peaks, passes, &c in the Western Himalayas, Karakoram and other ranges over an area of 90,000 square miles, including the 2nd highest peak in the world 28287 feet, and farther by determining the position and height of Yarkund, Llasa,&c.
Has received the gold medal of the Royal Geographical Society for his triangulation Surveys. Author of various articles for the Asiatic Society of Bengal and for the Royal Geographical Society.
Distinguished for his Mathematical attainments, his geodetical labors and his researches in the Physical Geography & topography of the Himalayas.
