TitleDunkin, Edwin: certificate of election to the Royal Society
CitationHas been attached to the Staff of the Royal Observatory since August, 1838, and from 1847 has had the special charge of a Department. On several occasions has been selected by the Astronomer Royal to superintend and carry out important astronomical expeditions, including the observation of the Total Solar Eclipse of July 28, 1851, at Christiania, Norway; the determination of the difference of longitude between the Royal Observatory and the Observatories of Cambridge (1853), Brussels (1853), Paris (1854), and a station on the island of Valencia (1862). Superintendent of the observing party and of the observations generally in the Astronomer Royal's Harton coal-pit pendulum Experiments (1854). Author of numerous and important astronomical Papers published in the "Memoirs" and "Monthly Notices" of the Royal Astronomical Society from 1851 to 1875, including "On the movement of the Solar System in Space deduced from the Proper Motions of 1167 Stars", "On some peculiar instances of Personal Equation in Zenith-distance Observations", "On the Probable Error of transit-observations by the eye-and-ear and chronographic methods", "On Personality in observing the Limbs of the Sun and Moon". &c. (For titles of other papers see General Index of "Memoirs" and "Monthly Notices"). Also Geographical Positions of Stations in Eastern and Western Africa determined from astronomical observations made by Captain Speke and others, published in the "Journal" of the Royal Geographical Society, Vols 33, and 35 and 36.
