Title | Berkeley, Miles Joseph: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Citation | Reverend Miles Joseph Berkeley. A celebrated Cryptogamic Botanist to whom a Royal Medal was awarded in 1865 for his researches in Cryptogamic Botany especially Mycology, the then President stating in his address that Mr Berkeley's labours for upwards of thirty five years had rendered him by far the most eminent living author in that department. Besides the numerous papers on Fungi in various Journals, the President specially referred to his 'Introduction to Cryptogamic Botany published in 1857, adding that Mr Berkeley's merits were not confined to description or classification but that he had been first to indicate and had subsequently proved physiological facts of the highest significance. During the fifteen years that have since elapsed, Mr Berkeley has continued his researches with the same ardour and success adding largely to the numerous important papers he had published and having been long considered as the most valuable referee in all questions of Mycology by the botanists of all parts of the world. |
