CitationEmployed since 1857 on the Indian Topographical Survey; from 1857 to 1863 in Kashmir and Ladakh, where peaks of the highest altitude were visited and surveyed: in 1864-5, on the Survey of the Western Duars of Bhutan - Since then in charge of the Topographical Survey of the Garo, Khasi, Jaintra and Naga Hills. Author of numerous papers and memoirs in the Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bengal, the Proceedings of the Geological, Geographical, and Zoological Societies, and other Journals on the Geology, Topography and Natural History of the districts visited: well known as an excellent Collector of and authority upon the Land Molluscs and Birds of British India.
