CitationThe leader in four Overland Arctic Expeditions and sharer in a fifth, in the course of which 1700 miles of new land and coast were explored and mapped under circumstances of great difficulty & hardship, and numerous astronomical and other observations made. Two of his journeys were in search of Sir John Franklin: on the second he succeeded in setting his fate at rest - his services on this occasion meeting with the high approval of the Lords Commissioners of the Admiralty, and he & his men receiving the Government Reward for the Same. The author of "Narrative of Arctic Expedition 1846/7", of various papers read before the Geographical, Ethnological, Physical, & other Societies. Distinguished for his zeal, energy and ability as a traveller in Arctic regions and one of the early explorers of the pass over the Rocky Mountains and of the Fraser river. Attached to science and a promoter of its progress in various branches by his observations and journeys.
