| Title | Ayrton, William Edward: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
| Citation | Having completed a regular course of study at Univ Coll Lond and in the physical laboratory of Sir W Thomson at the Glasgow Univ went to India in 1868 in the Govt Telegraph service where he was engaged under Mr Schwendler in developing a complete system of testing the telegraph lines.
From 1873 to 1878 was Professor of Natural Philosophy, and of Telegraph Engineering in the Japanese technical University the - "Imperial College of Engineering". Since his return has been engaged in private physical research.
Has communicated to the Royal Society original Papers on the Viscosity of dielectrics, the Magic Mirror of Japan, and three on the Contact theory of voltaic action; as well as others to the Physical, Telegraph-Engineers, and other Societies (and which have appeared in their Journals) on Electric capacity, Electrolysis, Electro-magnetic-theory-of-light, Heat-conduction, Seismographs, Scientific manufacture of electric instruments, Testing telegraph lines, and notably those on the "Specific inductive capacity of gases", a "New determination of the ratio of the electro-magnetic to the electro-static unit of quantity", a "Neglected principle that may be employed in earthquake measurements", "Experiments on heat conduction in stone", a "New Theory of terrestrial magnetism" - These will be found collected in the accompanying volume |
