In charge of the Government Eclipse Expedition to the Nicobar Islands, 1875. Author of "Inorganic Chemistry" (Murby, 1874) & of "Organic Chemistry", Encyclopaedia Britannica, 9th ed. Translator & Editor of Wesmann's "Studies in the Theory of Descent", (Sampson Low, Marston & Co, 1881-1882).
Author of numerous original papers, chiefly on organic chemistry, on physics & biology (chiefly entomology) published in The "Journal of the Chemical Society", The "Berichte der deutschen chemischen Gesellschaft," The "Phil Mag," "Chemical News," "Annals & Mag of Nat Hist," "Trans Essex Field Club", "Proc Zoo Soc" &c
Appointed Professor of Chemistry in the Finsbury Technical College, City & Guild of London Institute, 1885. Author of the following among many other papers on Organic Chemistry: - "Researches on Secondary and Tertiary Azo-Compounds," No I, Jour Chem Soc 1883, No II Ibid 1884, No III Ibid, 1885. "On the Action of Dibrom-a-napthol upon Amines", Ibid 1884. "Uber eine neue Prufungsmethode auf salpetrige Saure", Ber deut Ch Ges 1884. "On the Constitution of the haloid derivatives of Naphthalene", Jour Chem Soc 1885 (fourth paper on the subject). Author (in conjunction with Mr W White) of "Report on the East Anglian Earthquake of 1884", Macmillan 1885. Has specially devoted himself to the Chemistry of Aromatic compounds and has taken a very active part in the promotion of Scientific Research among local Societies.
