For 20 years engaged in the Geological Survey and has mapped parts of Kent Surrey etc in the south of England and of Durham & Northumberland in the north, with illustrative sections & memoirs. Is the author of a general Memoir on the Geology of the Weald of Kent & Sussex. Author of various papers in Quart Journ Geological Soc; of a paper On the relation of Geology to Agriculture in Journ Roy Agric Soc and on the Channel Tunnel in Quart Journ Sci. Assisted Dr Buchanan in a Report to the Privy Council Medical Officer "On the distribution of Phthsis as affected by dampness of soil. Secretary 1872-81 of the Geol Section of Brit Assoc. Member for England of the Committee for preparing an international Geological map of Europe.
