CitationOne of the Assistt Directors of the Geol Survey of Canada. Has been actively engaged in the field-work of the Survey for 36 years. Was concurrently Profr of Chem and Geol Queens Univy, Kingston, five Sessions, 1863-8; Naturalist and Med Officer on the Govt expeditions to Hudson Bay 1884-5. Royal Commr on the Minl Resous of Ontario 1888. Disting[uishe]d for his services to Cann Geol having worked over large sections of the Domn E of the Rocky Mts. Has made extensive researches among the Laurentian and Huronian rocks and in reference to Glacial phenomena. Has added materially to our knowledge of the Zoology and Botany, more especy of the Forestry of Can. Has published nearly 100 Reports and papers of a scientc character. They include upwards of 20 Reports, some accompd by Maps of the Geol Survey, between 1857 and 90, giving the results of Geoll and Topogl Surveys and explorats on both sides of Hudson Bay and Straits, along the princl waters between the upper Great Lakes and James Bay and those between the Winnipeg Basin and Hudson Bay, the first survey of Lake Nipigon, Geol surveys of the Cann shores of Lakes Ontario, Eric, Huron and Superior, in the N.W. Territs and the Athabasca region, the Thunder Bay and Sudbury Mining districts, the Gaspe dist, the Lake peninsula of Ontario and in other parts of the extensive regions of Canada. Although much condensed, these Reports cover about 930 pages Royal octavo. Among many additionl publications may be mentioned "The causes of the Fertility of the land in the Canadn N.W. Territories."- "The Petroleum Field of Ontario."-"The Huronn System in Canada."-"Glacial Phenoma in Canada."-"The Geoly of Ontario with Special Reference to Economic Minls".-"The Laurentn and Huronn Systems North of Lake Huron."-"The Origin of Gneiss."-"The Forests of Canada."-"The Forest Fires in Northern Canada."
