TitleTrouton, Frederick Thomas: certificate of election to the Royal Society
CitationDiscovered the law connecting the extent head of vaporisation and molecular weights of bodies known as "Trouton's law" and experimentally determined the directions of vibration of electric and inaquatic force in plane polarised light. He has made other important observations on the phase of secondary waves and on the influence of the size of the reflector in Hertz's equipment. Author of - "On Molecular Latent Heat" (Phil. Mag. Vol 18 p55) "Repetition of Hertz's experiments and determination of the directions of the vaibrations of Light" (Nature Vol 39 p291) "Experiments on Electromagnetic Radiation including some on the phase of secondary waves" (Nature Vol 40 p398) "Multiple resonance obtained with Hertz's vibrators" (Nature Vol 41 p295) "On the accelleration (sic) of secondary Electro-magnetic waves" (Phil. Mag. Vol 29 p269) "The influence the size of the reflector has in Hertz's experiments" (Phil. Mag. Vol 32 p 80) "Some experiments to determine wave velocity in certain dielectins" (B.A. Report 1889 p517) " On the motion under gravity of fluid bubbles through the vertical columns of liquid of a different density" (Proc. R.S. vol 54 p12) "On the motion of a body near points of unstable equilibrium and on the same when capable of internal vibrations" (Proc. R.D.S. 1888 p.39) "On a convenient method of obtaining any required electrical potential for use in Laboratory Teaching" (Proc. R.D.S. 888 p110) "On the control supply pipes have on reeds" (Proc. R.D.S. 1888 p132) "A coefficient of abrasion as an absolute standard of hardness" (B.A. Report 1890) "On the use of a permanently magnetised core in a Telephone" (Phil.Mag Vol 34. p277.) "On Ohms Law in Electrolytes" (B.A. Reports 1887 and 1888) jointly with Prof. Fitzgerald. "A method of determining the specific induction capacity of dielectrics" (Phil. Mag. Vol 33 p530) jointly with Mr W. E. Lilly.

    Collection highlights

Browse the records of some of our collections, which cover all branches of science and date from the 12th century onwards. These include the published works of Fellows of the Royal Society, personal papers of eminent scientists, letters and manuscripts sent to the Society or presented at meetings, and administrative records documenting the Society's activities since our foundation in 1660.

    The Royal Society
