Distinguished as a chemist and crystallographer, especially for his discovery of optically active compounds of sulphur, tin, and nitrogen - of fundamental importance as affording proof that the theory of asymmetry, first applied by van't Hoff and Le Bol to carbon, may be extended to other elements. has published a large number of papers, chiefly in the Transactions of the Chemical Society, on Camphor Derivatives (in conjunction with Dr Kipping), on the Resolution of Externally compensated Bases, along with others on Descriptive Crystallography, &c.
