Has done much to promote the progress of Science by inventing or materially improving many philosophial instruments, notably Pendulum apparatus for observations of changes in the vertical and slow movements of the earth's surface; Astronomical spectroscopes; Rocking microtomes; Artificial respiration apparatus and other physiological instruments; Instruments for the study of the physiology of plants; Apparatus for platinum thermometry, for measurements of resistance, and for standard electrical measurements. Has materially aided scientific discovery not only by his own inventions, but by carrying out the rough ideas of other investigators in the design and construction of novel apparatus. Took part with the late Sir Douglas Galton in experiments on railway brakes (Proc Inst Mech Eng, 1878); carried out, jointly with Professor Darwin, the experiments of the BA Committee on the measurement of the lunar disturbance of gravity (BA Reports1880, 1881, 1882). Joint author with Prof Darwin of a paper 'On an Instrument for Detecting and Measuring Small Changes in the Direction of the Force of Gravity' (ibid, 1881); Author also of papers on a Rotary Dynamometer (Proc Inst Mech Eng, 1876); Distribution of Driving Power in Laboratories ('Nature', Jan 14, 1886); 'An Improved Form of Temperature Regulator (ibid, April 22, 1886); 'A Self-recording Barometer (Proc Camb Phil Soc, Vol v, 1886).
