CitationResided and travelled for ten years (1877-1886) in Australia, Tasmania, and New Zealand, investigating the insect fauna of those regions, and discovering a very great number of new forms. Author of a 'Handbook of British Lepidoptera,' and of more than sixty papers dealing mainly with the morphology, classification, and geographical distribution of various groups of Insecta (Lepidoptera); amongst them a series of monographs of families of Australian Lepidoptera (Proc Linn Soc, NSW, 1879-1897, and Trans Entom Soc, Lond, 1884-1887); 'a similar series elucidating the Lepidopterous Fauna of New Zealand (Trans NZ Inst, 1882-1891); 'A Monograph of the Pyralidina of the Hawaiian Islands' (Trans Entom Soc, Lond, 1888); 'A Classification of the Pyralidina of the European Fauna (1890); 'A Classification of the Geometrina of the European Fauna' (1892), and papers dealing with the fauna of the Malay Archipelago, New Guinea, and the South Pacific Islands. Author of the article 'Micro-Lepidoptera in the Fauna Hawaiiensis.'
