Has conducted Marine Surveys in command of HM Ships from 1886 to 1904 in Australia, Pacific Islands, China Seas, and British Islands. Has done much for the scientific explorations of the deep oceans. Conducted the first expedition for the boring at Funafuti. Author of 'A Method of obtaining Time by Equal Altitudes of Two Stars on opposite of Meridian' (Roy Astron Soc, Monthly Notices); 'Articles in Ency Brit on Sextant, Nautical Surveying and Sounding'; and of 'Report on comparision of Portable Transit Instrument and Sextant for accurate determinations of Time from results of an extended series of observations by both instruments.'
