Government Quinologist and Director of Cinchona Cultivation in Bengal. Has travelled exrensively in India, investigating especially the phytogeography of some of its unexplored provinces. Is Editor of the Annals of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Calcutta, to which he has contributed valuable papers. His chief publications are: - 'On the genera Pedicularis, Gomphostemma, Argemone, Chelidonium, Microtaenia, Pterocarpus, and on the Leguminosae of the Malayan Peninsula'; 'On the Floras of the Andaman, Barren, and Laccadive Islands, and the Kachin Hills (Burma)'; 'On the Races of Wheat and Mustard cultivated in Bengal'; 'On the Rusts on Indian Wheat'; 'On the Cultivation and Trade in Gunja, in Bengal.' Author of 'A Century of New or Rare Indian Plants' (with Sir G King), and 'Novicicae Indicae,' with diagnosis of 300 species new to the Indian Flora; a Flora of Bengal and Chittagong, entitled 'Bengal Plants,' containing definitions of the orders, genera and species of the indigenous and commonly cultivated plants of those provinces systematically arranged.
