TitleSwinburne, Sir James: certificate of election to the Royal Society
CitationHas been intimately connected with the development of the theory of dynamo design since dynamo machines began to be manufactured on a large scale in this country. Developed the theory of armature reaction in direct-current machines, and in alternating current dynamos and motors (originated by Lord Kelvin); worked also largely at the development of the theory of alternating current measuring instruments; also at Clark's standard cells; investigated the action of various kinds of secondary batteries with lead and other electrodes; investigated questions of high vacua and methods of measuring very small pressures; has been for a number of years intimately connected with the applications of the sciences of physics and chemistry to industrial purposes, and more especially with the theoretical work in electricity and in electro-chemistry specially arising out of these applications. Has published the following papers, among other: - 'Experiments on Secondary Cells' (Inst Elect Eng, 1886); 'Method of Measuring Mutual Induction' (Physical Soc, 1887); 'Design of Transformers' (Brit Assoc, 1889); 'Dynamos and Motors' (Inst Elect Eng, 1890); 'High Vacua' (Brit Assoc, 1890); 'Alternating Current Condensers' (Physical Soc, 1890); 'Alternating Current Distribution' (Inst Elect Eng, 1891); 'Some Points in Electrolysis' (Physical Soc, 1891); 'The Electrometer as Wattmeter' (ibid); 'Causes of Variation of Clark's Standard Cells' (Brit Assoc, 1891); 'Measurement of Liquid Resistances' (ibid); 'Electrical Measuring Instruments' (Inst Civil Eng, 1892); 'Potentiometer for Alternating Currents' (Physical Soc, 1894); 'Hunting of Governed Engines' (Brit Assoc, 1894); 'Nernst's Electric Light' (Soc Arts, 1899); 'Electric Railways' (Inst Elect Eng, 1901); 'Chlorine Smelting' (Faraday Soc, 1903); 'Reversibility of Thermodynamics' (Brit Assoc, 1903); 'Entropy' (1903); 'Chlorine in Metallurgy' (Chicago, 1904); 'Theory of Electricity' (Inst Civil Eng Student's Address, 1905); 'Radiation Efficiency and Temperature' (Physical Soc, 1905); 'Physics of Ore Flotation' (Faraday Soc, 1905); etc. Original Editor of the Physical Society's Scientific Abstracts; an Ex-President of the Institution of Electrical Engineers; Vice-President of the Physical Society; Vice-President of the Faraday Society.

    Collection highlights

Browse the records of some of our collections, which cover all branches of science and date from the 12th century onwards. These include the published works of Fellows of the Royal Society, personal papers of eminent scientists, letters and manuscripts sent to the Society or presented at meetings, and administrative records documenting the Society's activities since our foundation in 1660.

    The Royal Society
