Took part in the Funafuti Expedition in 1896. Leader of an exploring expedition to the Maldive and Laccadive Archipelagoes in 1899-1900, and of another in the Indian Ocean. Editor of the 'Fauna and Geography of the Maldive and Laccadive Archipelagoes,' 1901-1905. Author of numerous memoirs on scientific subjects, of which the following may be mentioned: 'The Coral Reefs of Funafuti, Rotuma and Fiji' (Proc Camb Phil Soc, 1898); The Building of Atolls' (Proc International Congress of Zoology, Cambridge, 1898); 'Narrative and Route of the Maldive and Laccadive Expedition,' and 'The Maldive and LaccadiveGroups, with Notes on other Coral Formations in the Indian Ocean,' in the Fauna and Geography of the Maldive and Laccadive Archipelagoes'; 'The Formation of the Maldives' (Journ Geograph Soc, 1902); 'The Development of Cycloseris' (Willey's Zoological Results, 1899); 'South African Corals of the genus Flabellum, with an account of their Anatomy and Development' (Marine Investigations in South Africa, 1902); 'The Turbinolid Corals of Corals of South Africa, with notes on their Anatomy and Variation' (ibid, 1904). Several papers on the classification of the Madreporaria (Proc Zool Soc, 1897 to 1899); 'On the Natives of Rotuma' (Journ Anthrop Inst, 1898); 'Lagoon Deposits,' in collaboration with Sir John Murray (Fauna and Geography of the Maldive and Laccadive Archipelagoes).
