| Citation | Steel Manufacture. Vice-President, Iron and Steel Institute. By his numerous scientific investigations respecting the properties of various alloys of iron, and his practical application of the results of those researches at his own works in Sheffield, he has done much to maintain the position of this country during the last 15 years in line with Germany and America, as regards the scientific production of various kinds of steel. He is the inventor of Manganese Steel which is now used very largely in this country, the Colonies, United States of America, and on the Continent. He has made researches on the Electrical Conductivity and Magnetic Properties of upwards of one hundred different alloys of iron, and has published numerous papers giving the resultsof those and other original investigations made by him. His scientific work has been recognized by the award of the Howard Quinquennial Prize, the Stephenson Gold Medal, and the Telford Gold Medal by the Institution of Civil Engineers, also by two Gold Medals from the French Societe d'Encouragement for l'lndustrie Nationale, and the John Scott Medal from the Franklin Institute, Philaedelphia. |
