CitationDirector of the Rothamsted Experimental Station for Agricultural Research. Successor of the late Sir Henry Gilbert; ex-Principal of the Wye Agricultural College. He is distinguished as an original worker in agricultural science. Author of paper, 'On the Effect of Plant Growth and of Manures on the Retention of Bases by the Soils' (Proc Roy Soc, 1905); of papers 'On the Determination of Plant Food in Soils by the use of weak Acid Solvents'; 'On a Method of Determining small quantities of Carbonates'; 'On the Mechanical Analysis of Soils'; On the Effect of the long-contained use of Sodium Nitrate upon the Composition of the Soil' (Transactions of the Chemical Society, 1902-1904). Also of numerous papers in the Journal of the Royal Agricultural Society, and of books on 'The Soil,' and on the 'Rothamsted Experiments.' (J Murray).
