Distinguished for his knowledge of and investigations in applied science, especially in relation to the applications of electricity and to the action of internal combustion engines. Author of many papers on these and other subjects, including the following : - 'On Discontinuous Fluid Motions involving Sources and Vortices' (Proc Lond Math Soc, 1898); 'On Electric Tramways' (Min Proc Inst CE, 1902); 'On the Parallel Working of Alternators' (Electrician, 1903); 'On Effects of Momentary Stresses in Metals' (Proc Roy Soc, 1905); 'On Explosions of Coal Gas and Air' (ibid, 1906); 'On a Recording Calorimeter for Explosions' (ibid, 1907); 'On the Indicated Power and Mechanical Efficiency of the Gas-Engine' (Proc Inst Mech Eng, 1907); 'On the Effect of Mixture Strength and Scavenging upon Thermal Efficiency' (ibid, 1908); 'On Heat-Flow and Temperature Distribution in the Gas-Engine' (Min Proc Inst CE, 1909).
