TitleStoney, George Gerald: certificate of election to the Royal Society
CitationWatt Medallist of the Institution of Civil Engineers. Educated privately until he entered the University of Dublin. In the Arts Faculty of the University he took First Honours in Mathematics and graduated second Senior Moderator and Gold Medallist (ie, second of the First Class) in experimental science. In the Faculty of Engineering he was awarded all three 'special certificates' - highest distinction obtainable in that Faculty. During the past nineteen years has conducted extensive and elaborate investigations for Messrs C A Parsons & Co, some extending over many years, as to the best forms and arrangement of steam turbine blades, and the best means of reducing the losses in Turbines, also, in investigating the losses by hysteresis and eddy-currents in armature cores, and he has worked out a successful system for the compensating of armature reaction and for the avoidance of sparking in high-speed electric generators. He has also worked out and improved the manufacture of parabolic searc-light reflectors, as also those of special curvature, usually called parabola-ellipse mirrors, for producing a flat beam directly from the mirror without the intervention of a dispersing lens. To attain this result involved extensive theoretical and practical investigations. Mr Stoney has been intimately connected with the designs and experimental investigations of marine turbines - from the Engines of the 'Turbinia' to those of the Cunard liners - and has attended all trials involving a departure in size or design. He has taken out, jointly with the Hon C A Parsons, numerous patents for improvements in generators, in turbines, and in search-light reflectors, a list of which and of some of the papers he has published (with copies) are submitted
