Title | Barkla, Charles Glover: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Description | Date stamp on reverse |
Citation | Professor of Physics, Kings College, London. Distinguished for his researches on Rontgen rays, which have resulted in the most important addition to our knowledge of the rays made since their discovery. He discovered (1) the polarization of the Rontgen rays; (2) that each chemical element can radiate Rontgen rays whose properties are characteristic of the elements, and are very closely connected with the atomic weight. He is the author of the following papers: 'PolarizedRontgen Radiation' (Phil Trans, A, vol cciv); 'Polarization in Secondary Rontgen Radiation' (Proc Roy Soc, A, vol lxxxvii); 'Secondary Radiation from Gases Subject to X-rays' (Phil Mag, Ser 6, vol v); 'On the Energy of Secondary Rontgen Radiation' (ibid, 6, vol vii); 'Secondary Rontgen Radiation' (ibid, 6, vol xi); Secondary Rontgen Rays and Atomic Weight of Nickel' (ibid, 6, vol xiv); 'On X-rays' (ibid, 6, vol xv); 'Homogeneous Secondary Rontgen Radiation' (ibid, 6, vol xvi); 'Absorption of Rontgen Rays' (ibid, 6, vol xvii); 'Typical Cases of Ionization by X-rays' (ibid, 6, vol xxi); 'On the Energy of Scattered X-radiation' (ibid, 6, vol xxi). |
