Title | Hill, James Peter: certificate of election to the Royal Society |
Citation | Jodrell Professor of Zoology and Comparative Anatomy in University College, London. Co-discoverer of the existence of the complete successional dentition in rudimentary form in Marsupials, also the discoverer of a well-developed placenta in certain Marsupials, thus upsetting previous conceptions. Assistant to the Professor of Biology in the University of Sydney from 1892 to 1906, and published many important papers during that period, but his chief work has been the demonstration (by the following memoirs) of the true anatomical characters of the Marsupialia and their relation to Placental Mammals: - 'Observations upon the Development and Succession of the Teeth in Perameles; together with a Discussion of the Homologies of the Teeth in Marsupial Animals' (with Prof J T Wilson, Quart Journ Micros Sci, 1897); 'The Placentation of Perameles' (ibid, 1898); 'Contributions to the Embryology of the Marsupialia' (ibid, 1900); 'On the Foetal Membranes, Placentation and Parturition of the Native Cat' (Anat Anzeiger,1900). Besides earlier papers on Enteropneusta, Prof Hill has published since he was appointed Professor in University College: - 'Observations on Development in Ornithorhynchus' (Quart Journ Micros Sci, 1907, with Prof J T Wilson), and on 'The Early Development of the Marsupialia' (ibid, 1910); also in the Phil Trans of the Royal Society (1907), 'Observations on the Development of Ornithorhynchus' in conjunction with Prof Wilson. |
