TitleHinks, Arthur Robert: certificate of election to the Royal Society
CitationChief Assistant, Cambridge Observatory, and University Lecturer in Surveying and cartography. Secretary of the Royal Astronomical Society. Has collated and discussed the international observations of the planet Eros made in 1900-1901 for the determination of the Sun's distance, an arduous piece of work which has occupied over eight year, and has involved the preparation of new methods, and the detection of unexpected sources of error, besides great labour: the result was announced to the French Academy on April 19th, 1909. Author of more than twenty papers in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society, Astronomische Nachrichten, Astrophysical Journ, &c. Some of these relate to the Eros work, and others to the determination of stellar parallaxes: - 'The Cambridge Machine for Measuring Celestial Photographs' (Monthly Notices, RAS, 1901); 'The Movements in the Nebula surrounding Nova Persei' (Astrophysical Journ, 1902); 'A Graphical Method of Applying Second Order Terms of the Differential Refraction' (Monthly Notices, Ras, 1903); 'On the Determination of Proper Motions without reference to Meridian Places' (ibid, 1905); 'Determination of Stellar Parallax at Cambridge' (ibid, 1905); 'Suggestions for a Theory of the Milky Way and the Clouds of Magellan' (Proc Camb Phil Soc, 1905).
