TitleRosenhain, Walter: certificate of election to the Royal Society
CitationSuperintendent of the Department of Metallurgy and Metallurgical Chemistry of the National Physical Laboratory. Dr Rosenhain is distinguished as a student of metallurgy and applied optics. He has carried out a large number of researches at Cambridge in association with Prof Ewing, and more recently at the National Physical Laboratory. Among his earlier papers, one dealing with the production of slip bands in metal is of special interest, while his recent paper on the crystalline structure of iron at high temperature (Proc Roy Soc, 1909) gives the first conclusive demonstration of the distinctive properties of the different form of iron known as alpha iron, beta iron and gamma iron. He is the author of the following among other publications: - 'Experiments on Steam Jets' (Proc Inst CE, 1899); 'The Crystalline Structure of Metals' (Bakerian Lecture for 1899 jointly with Prof Ewing, Phil Trans, 1899), and second paper (ibid, 1900); 'On an Improved Form of Coal Calorimeter' (Phil Mag, 1901); 'The Re-crystallization of Platinum' (Proc Roy Soc, 1902); 'The Plastic Yielding of Iron and Steel' (Journ Iron and Steel Inst, 1904); 'Further Observations on Slip Bands' (Proc Roy Soc, 1905); 'Deformation and Fracture in Iron and Steel' (Carnegie Research Medal, Journ Iron and Steel Inst, 1906); 'Observations on Recalescence Curves' (Proc Phys Soc, 1907); 'The Alloys of Lead and Tin' (with P A Tucker, Phil Trans, 1908); 'The Crystalline Structure of Iron at High Temperatures' (with J C W Humfrey, Proc Roy Soc, 1909); 'The Properties of some Alloys of Copper with Aluminium and Manganese' (Ninth Report to the Alloys Research Committee of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, with F C A H Lantsberry, Proc Inst Mech Eng, 1910).
