Distinguished for his work on comparative vertebrate embryology; especially on mammalian embryology, on the development of the structures by means of which the embryo is attached to the uterus, and on the development amd morphology of the placenta. On these subjects his wide knowledge and comprehensive researches are of great value and have gained for him everywhere a position of high authority. He is the author of numerous scientific memoirs, of which the following may be mentioned: - 'On the Development of the Optic Nerve of Vertebrates and the Choroidal Fissure of Embryonic Life' (Quart Journ Micros Sci, vol xxxiv); 'A Re-investigation into the Early Stages of the Development of the Rabbit' (ibid, vol xxxvii); 'On the causes which lead to the Attachment of the Mammalian Embryo to the Walls of the Uterus' (ibid, vol xxxvii); 'The Primitive Streak of the Rabbit, &c' (ibid, vol xxxvii); 'An Experimental Examination into the Growth of the Blastoderm of the Chick' (Proc Roy Soc, vol lx); 'The Segmentation of the Ovum of the Sheep' (Quart Journ Micros Sci, vol xli); 'The Development of the Pig during the first 10 days' (ibid, vol xli); 'Morphology of the Ungulate Placenta' (Phil Trans, B, vol cxcviii); 'The Devvelopment of 'Gymmarchus niloticus'' (Budgett Memorial Volume). |
