Citation | Director of the Kodaikanal Observatory, S India. Distinguished for his researches in solar physics, to the study of which he has devoted himself since 1886, first in his private observatory in Surrey and latter, since 1906, in his official capacity at Kodaikanal Observatory. His published work includes the following: - 'Some Recent Attempts to Photograph Faculae and Prominences' (Astronomy-Astrophysics, 1893); 'The Radiation of Gases' (Phil Mag, 1895); 'Wave-length Determinations and General Results from a Detailed Examination of Spectra Photographed at the Solar Eclipse of January 22, 1898 (India), (Phil Trans, A, vol cxcvii, 1901); 'Solar Eclipse of 1900, May 28 - General Discussion of Spectroscopic Results' (ibid, vol cci); 'Report of Expedition to Pineda de la Sierra, Spain, 1905, Aug 29-30' (Proc Roy Soc, 1906); 'Radial Movement in Sunspots' (describing spectroscopic phenomena of great importance, and giving an interpretation which is generally accepted), (Month Notices, Roy Astron Soc, vols lxix-lxx, Bull Kodaik Obs No 15); 'The Autocollimating Spectroheliograph of the Kodaikanal Observatory' (Month Notices, Roy Astron Soc, vol lxxi); 'The Ultra-violet Region in Sunspot Spectra' (ibid, vol lxviii); 'Pressure in the Reversing Layer' (Bull Kodaik Obs No 18); 'Wave-length of H delta and Hepsilon in the Solar Spectrum' (Astrosphys Journ, vol xxviii); 'Note on the Magnetic Field in the Sunspot of September, 1909' (Bull Kodaik Obs No 22); 'Halley's Comet and its Spectrum as observed at Kodaikanal Observatory' (Month Notices, Roy Astron Soc, vol lxx). |
