CitationFellow and Tutor of Trinity College, Cambridge. Distinguished as a physiologist and especially as an investigator in the field of muscle physiology. His researches on the metabolism of muscle, while of fundamental importance in themselves, are noteworthy as having opened up the path for the work of many others. The following are his principal papers: - 'The Vaso-constrictor Fibres of the Great Auricular Nerve in the Rabbit' (Journ Physiol, 1897); 'The Survival Respiration of Muscle' (ibid, 1898); 'The Influence of Oxygen upon the Survival Respiration of Muscle' (ibid, 1902); 'The Relation of Oxygen to the Survival Metabolismof Muscle' (ibid, 1902); 'Tetanus dolorosus and the Relation of Tetanus-toxin to the Sensory Nerves and Spinal Ganglia' (Brain, 1903); 'The Osmotic Properties of Muscle and their Modification in Fatigue and Rigor. Lactic Acid in Amphibian Muscle' (with F G Hopkins. Journ Physiology 1907); 'On the Alleged Formation of Lactic Acid in Muscle during Autoysis and in Post Survival Periods' (ibid, 1911); 'The Carbonic Output of Mammalian Muscle' (In the Press).
