| Citation | Fellow and Tutor of Trinity College, Cambridge. Distinguished as a physiologist and especially as an investigator in the field of muscle physiology. His researches on the metabolism of muscle, while of fundamental importance in themselves, are noteworthy as having opened up the path for the work of many others.
