Distinguished for his experimental researches, especially on ionisation of gases and radio-activity, the following being among the more important of his published papers: - 'On the Conductivity of Gases traversed by Cathode Rays' (Phil Trans, 1901); 'On a Kind of Radio-activity imparted to certain Salts by Cathode Rays' (Phil Mag, 1902); 'Some Experiments on the Electrial Conductivity of Atmospheric Air' (Physical Review, 1903); 'On the Radio-activity of Lead and other Metals' (Phil Mag, 1907); 'On the Radio-activity of ordinary Metals and on the penetrating Radiation from the Earth' (Physical Review, 1908); 'On the Radio-activity of Potassium and other Alkali Metals' (Phil Mag, 1908); 'On the Active Deposits from Actinium' (Physical Review, 1909); 'On the Diffusion of Actinium Emanation and on the active Deposit produced by it' (Phil Mag, 1912); 'On the Relative Intensities of the Earth's Penetrating Radiation on Land and Sea' (ibid); 'On the Magnetic Properties of Heusler's Alloys' (Physical Review, 1907); 'On the Series Lines in the Arc Spectrum of Mercury' (Proc Roy Soc, 1912); 'On the Constitution of the Mercury Green Line 5461 AU and on the Magnetic Resolution of its Satellites by an Echelon Grating' (ibid).
