| Citation | Member of the Institutions of Civil Engineers, Electrical Engineers, Mechanical Engineers, and Physical Society. Engineer, practising chiefly in applications of Electricity. During the past twenty years he has been closely associated with the progress of Electrical Engineering in Great Britain, has devoted considerable attention to scientific research, and has made numerous experimental investigations, more especially in connection with the phenomena of the Electric Discharge in Vacuo. The results of his researches on Cathode Rays and their Reflection, Rontgen Rays and their Production, the Mechanical Effects of Canal Rays, the Absorption of the Residual Gas in Vacuum Tubes, the Fatigue of Glass to Fluorescence, on the Transit of Ions in the Electric Arc, and on the Luminosity of the Rare Earths have been communicated in twelve papers to the Royal Society. A list of these, and of other papers read by him before the Royal Institutions, the Physical Society, the Rontgen Society, and other bodies is appended. His candidature has been previously supported by the following Fellows, since deceased: - Lord Kelvin, Lord Armstrong, Sir Frederick Bramwell, Dr John Hopkinson, Prof Ayrton, Lord Rosse. |
