CitationProfessor of Botany in the South Africian College and Hon Director of tne National Botantic Gardens, Cape Town. Distinguished for his contributions to Botany, more especially for his work on the Gnetaceae; his botanical exploration in Africa, and , in recent years, for leading part he has taken in connexion with the foundation of the National Botanic Gardens at Cape Town. Among the more important of his published papers are: - 'Some Observations on 'Welwitchia mirabilis' (Phil Trans, 1906); 'Further Observations on 'Welwitschia '' (ibid, 1909); 'On the Embryo 'Welwitschia'' (Annal Bot, 1910); 'On the Microsporangium and Microspore of 'Gnetum'' (ibid, 1912); 'On the Morphology of Certain Structures Concerned in Reproduction in the Genus Gnetum' (Trans Linn Soc, 1914). Prof Pearson is editor of the 'Annals of the Bolus Herbarium' (Camb Univ Press), and author of various papers on Systematic, Geographical and Economic Botany, including 'Verbenaceae' (Flora Capensis, 1901); 'Thymelaceae' (Flora of Tropical Africa, 1910); 'The Botany of the Ceylon Polarias' (Journ Linn Soc, 1899); 'Some Notes on a Journey from Walfish Bay to Windhoek' (Kew Bull, 1907); 'The Travels of a Botanist in South West Africa' (Geog Journ, 1910); 'The Problem of the Witchweed' (Union Dept of Agric Bull 40, 1913); also author of various articles on the South Africa Botanic Gardens, including 'A National Botanic Garden' (Pres Address to Section C, South Africian Assoc for the Advancement of Science, 1910); 'A State Botanic Garden' (The State, 1911).
