CitationUniversity Lecturer in Palaeozoology, Cambridge. He has materially assisted in the advancement of science by teaching the methods of scientific research; he is the author of scientific treatises of value (of the more important of which a list is subjoined); and he is distinguished for his knowledge of palaeontology and especially of the fossils of the cretaceous rocks. The following are some of his more important contributions: 'A Monograph of the Cretaceous Lamellibranchiata of England' (2 vols, Palaeontol Soc, 1899-1911); 'The Mollusca of the Chalk Rock' (Quart Journ Geol Soc, vols lii and liii, 1896-1897); 'The Igneous Rocks of the neighbourhood of Builth' (ibid, vol i, 1894); 'The genus Grammatodon' (Ann Mag Nat Hist, vol iii, 1899); 'The genus Desorella' (Geol Mag, 1904); 'The Cretaceous Fauna of Pondoland' (Ann South Africian Museum, vol iv, 1906); 'Echinoidea, Brachiopoda and Lamellibranchia from the Upper Cretaceous Limestone of Veeds Camp, Buffalo River' (Ann South Africian Museum, vol vii, 1908); 'The Palaeontology of the Upper Cretaceous Deposits of Nothern Nigeria' (in T D Falconer's 'Geology and the Geography of Northern Nigeria,' 1911); 'The Evolution of Inoceramus in the Cretaceous Period' (Quart Journ Geol Soc, Feb 1912); 'Catalogue of the Type Fossils in the Woodwardian Museum, Cambridge' (1891, Supplement, 1893); 'Trilobita, Eurypterida and Xiphosura' (Camb Nat Hist, vol iv, 1909); 'Catalogue of Fossils in Students' Series, Sedgwick Museum' (Camb Univ Press; 'Palaeontology. - Invertebrates' (Camb Biol Series, Univ Press, 1909).
