Distinguished for his researches in Geology and Petrology. Author of the following papers, among many other: - 'The Variolitic Rocks of Mont Genevre' (with Prof J W Gregory) (Quart Journ Geol Soc, 1890); 'The Rhyolites of Co Antrim' (Trans R Dubl Soc, 1896); 'On Metamorphic Rocks in Eastern Tyrone and South Donegal' (Trans Roy Irish Acad, 1900); 'On the Geology of Slieve Gallion' (Trans R Dubl Soc, 1897); 'On Composite Gneisses in Boylagh, W Donegal' (Proc Roy Irish Acad, 1902); 'The Red Zone in the Basaltic Series of Antrim' (Geol Mag, 1908); 'On Rock Specimens Dredged from the Floor of the Atlantic off the West Coast of Ireland' (with T Crook) (Geol Surv Ireland, 1910), and other works in the Memoirs of that Survey; 'Glacial Features in Spitzbergen' (Proc Roy Irish Acad, 1911); 'The Problem of the Liffey Valley' (Geol Mag, 1912); 'The Wexford Gravels' (with T Hallisey) (ibid, 1914). Has been a successful teacher of Geology in London since 1878), and is the author of valuables treatises on physical geology, including 'Aids in Practical Geology (6 editions); 'Open Air Studies and Outlines of Mineralogy.'
