CitationProfessor of Physiology, University of Sheffield. Distinguished in physiology, especially for his work on nerve, and latterly also on animal calorimetry. His 'Injury Current of Nerve, the Key to its Physical Structure' attracted general attention as a fundamental contribution towards the application of modern physiochemical knowledge to the reactions of nerve. Among his published papers are: - 'Demarcation Current of Mammalian Nerve' (Proc Roy Soc); 'Demarcation Current and Concentrative Law' (ibid); 'Decline of the Injury Current and its Modification by Temperature' (ibid); 'Structure and Function of Nerve Fibres' (ibid); 'Electromotive Changes in the Peripheral End of the Cut Vagus Nerve' (Proc Physiol Soc); 'Basophil Granules in Nerve-fibres' (ibid); 'Migration of Potassium and the Injury Current' (ibid); 'Potassium Salts in Nerve-fibres' (ibid); 'Chlorides in Nerve-fibres' (ibid); 'The Structure and Function of Striated Muscle' (Quart Journ Expt Physiol 1909). Numerous Reports on Calorimetry applied to Man (Brit Assoc Reports). President of Section 'Y,' British Association, 1911.
