DescriptionDate stamp on reverse
CitationAssistant, First Class, British Museum (Nat Hist). Distinguished for his contribution to Ichthyology, on which he has published many important works, referring to morphology, classific and geographical distribution. In a long series of papers (1902-1903) Mr Regan has made a detailed study of the Skeleton of Selachii and teleostei, with the view to ascertaining the relationships of the genera, families and orders and of expressing them in a natural classification. Among systematic works may be specially mentioned an elaborate Monograph of the Loricariidae (Trans Zool Soc, 17, 1904) and Reports on Fishes from the Indian Ocean (Trans Linn Soc, 12, 1908), the 'Scotia' Anarctic Fishes (Trans Roy Soc, Edin, XLIX, 1913) and the 'Terra Nova' Fishes (British Museum, 1914). He has added largely to the knowledge of Fishes by numerous revisions of separate families. The study of geographical distribution has been greatly advanced by the following Memoirs: - The Distribution of Fresh-water Fishes in the Malay Archipelago (Brit Assoc, 1911), an important discussion of the Reptilia, Batrachia and Pisces of Mexico (Biologia Centrali-Americana, 1915), forming part of an elaborate account of the fishes of that country; and the 'Scotia' and 'Terra Nova' reports referring to Antarctic and Sourthern Fishes. In these discussionshe has emphasised the significance of the evidence derived from the strictly fresh-water groups and taking into due consideration the facts of Palaeontology he has come to important conclusions with regard to former land-connexions between Continents now isolated from one another.
